We are not here to tell you how to drink your whiskey but just to suggest a few ways you can get the very best out of your favourite whiskey. There is a neither right nor wrong way to drink your whiskey. How you drink it is largely a personal choice, whatever way you best enjoy it.
Whiskey Glass
The glass from which you drink your whiskey can be quite important. The tradition whiskey glass is of course a whiskey tumbler. A whiskey tumbler is perfectly fine if you’re drinking a malt whiskey that you already enjoy. However, it might not be suitable when you taste a whiskey for the first time as it might not do the whiskey enough justice. A tulip shaped glass is ideal for tasting a whiskey as you can swirl the whiskey around the glass with little chance of spilling it. The aromas of the whiskey are also concentrated in the neck of a tulip shaped glass.
Adding Water
A fair number of whiskey drinkers say adding a small touch of water, particularly still spring water, can enhance the flavour and aroma of a whiskey and even bring out the hidden characteristics of the whiskey. However, some disagree and say that high levels of chlorine in tap water would ruin rather than complement the whiskey, in which case it should be avoided at all costs.
Adding Ice
To be fair, it’s such a shame to add ice to your single malt Scotch whiskey as it will only decrease the whiskey temperature, freezing its beautiful aroma and the smell, leading to the dull taste of your whiskey. If you regularly add ice to your whiskey, we suggest you try it without, and mark our words, it will be twice as enjoyable.
Adding Mixers
Adding mixers to whiskey is becoming more and more popular but you might like to ask yourself why bother drinking whiskey at all? Such mixers as soda, lemonade, cola, and even red-bull do absolutely nothing but completely cover up the true whiskey taste. With that said, some blended whiskey, when mixed with the right ingredients, can make an extremely refreshing long drink indeed.
